Before his arrival at Manchester United, Ruben Amorim was highly regarded with some even suggesting he could be the “next great manager” in football. He was a leading candidate for the Liverpool job as well as being tipped to be Pep Guardiola’s successor at Manchester City. Hence, his appointment was deemed a major coup for a club still living off its past success. Although the timing of the appointment (November 1, 2024) was not optimal, the expectations for Amorim were still lofty – After all he accepted the gigantic task of trying to restoring Manchester United back to the Summit of English football and a challenger for major European honors. Much like last season, the decision makers at Manchester United determined the season a success or failure based on the result of one match – last year’s FA Cup final and this year’s Europa League final. Unfortunately for Manchester United fans, they lost the Europa League final in Bilbao to Tottenham.
Ruben Amorim’s 1st season as Manchester United Manager
Overall, Amorim’s start at Manchester United has been horrible. When you consider the fact the Arne Slot won the English Premier League in is first season, the ineffectiveness of Amorim at United is even more magnified. His overall record is a poor one. 16 wins from 42 games is not acceptable at any “Big” club.

England vs Europe
Amorim’s Manchester United were much better in Europe competition than in English competitions. In fact, in the lead up to the Europa League Final, Manchester United were unbeaten in 10 games. This included a historic comeback in the quarterfinals against Lyon at Old Trafford!

Record in all competitions
Incredibly, Manchester United have scored 1.25 goals per game and conceded 1.58 goals per game this season under Amorim in England versus 2.55 scored and 1.27 conceded per game in Europe. Their goal difference of -10 in the Premier League is shocking for a club of Manchester United’s salary. Amorim won just 25.93% of his premier league games this season. No one could have predicted how poor the performances would been under Amorim. Growing pains were expected but this was shambolic from Manchester United.

Home vs Away
It is hard to believe how much things have changed at Old Trafford over the years. Once a fortress for Manchester United, The Theater of Dreams now routinely showcases some of the worst team performances in the club’s history. Amorim won 50% of home games in his first season – a percentage that needs to improve significantly if he is to restore the reputation of the English Giants.
